General Information

The program of studies in nursing at New Kensington is for the registered nurse who is interested in continuing education toward a baccalaureate degree. Individuals who are interested in basic nursing education have a variety of options.

Types of Nursing Programs

There are 3 types of programs that will prepare individuals to become nurses: diploma programs, associate degree programs, and baccalaureate degree programs.

Diploma Programs

Diploma programs are hospital-based programs which usually require approximately 2 years to complete. The focus of diploma programs is primarily nursing theory and clinical experiences in addition to supportive courses. At graduation students receive a diploma in nursing.

Associate Degree Programs

Associate degree (AD) programs also require approximately 2 years to complete. The curriculum in an AD program includes basic nursing education in addition to selected liberal arts courses. At graduation students receive an Associate Degree in Nursing.

Baccalaureate Degree Programs

Baccalaureate (BS) programs are based in colleges and universities and usually require 4 years to complete. The curriculum in a baccalaureate program includes basic nursing education in addition to a broad base of liberal arts and education courses.

Students who graduate from any accredited basic nursing education program are eligible to take the state licensing examination which on successful completion awards the graduate a registered nurse license. Programs like the one at Penn State New Kensington are designed for nurses who have received their basic education in diploma or AD programs and want to pursue a baccalaureate degree.

Individuals who enroll in basic programs can take support courses for credit, such as anatomy and physiology, microbiology, psychology, math, nutrition, and English, at Penn State New Kensington. The credits from these courses can be applied to the RN to BSN requirements if that degree is desired after graduation from the basic nursing program. The coordinator of the Nursing Program at Penn State New Kensington advises students who enroll in these courses. Additional information about the profession of Nursing can be accessed at www.nln.org.
