NEW KENSINGTON, Pa. -- For the seventh consecutive year, the Penn State New Kensington Alumni Society will co-sponsor the reception for student honorees at Penn State New Kensington's annual Academic and Student Achievement Awards ceremony.

The society, based at the campus, donated $500 to help recognize more than 100 students for their accomplishments during the fall and spring semesters. The "Celebration of Excellence" awards ceremony is set for 7 p.m. Friday, April 28, in the campus' Forum Theatre.

The highlight of the evening is the presenting of the Eric A. and Josephine S. Walker Award to the student whose outstanding qualities of character, scholarship and leadership contribute to the prestige of the campus. Danielle Richardson, a senior communications major, was last year’s Walker Award recipient.

Prior to the Walker Award presentation, 25 students will garner acclaim for academic achievements in the colleges of Engineering, Information Sciences and Technology, Liberal Arts, University College, and Division of Undergraduate Studies. In addition, 41 students will be honored for participation in the Honors program, as well as earning the Evan Pugh Scholar, President's Freshman and President Sparks awards. Two faculty, full time and part time, will receive recognition for excellence in teaching.

Extracurricular plaudits will go to 36 students for selection to Who’s Who Among Students in Universities and American Junior Colleges, and earning awards for Community Service, Performing Arts, Literary Award, Lion Ambassador of the Year, Emerging Leader, and Student Government Association. Forty-six student-athletes will earn honors for superior performance in the classroom and on the field or court.

The alumni society also will present its annual Penn State Spirit award to the campus student who exhibits integrity and character as a leader, demonstrates outstanding dedication to the campus, and exemplifies the meaning of Penn State pride. Vera Spina Greenwald, president of the society and former campus student, will announce the winner.
