Mackinly “Mack” Adams hasn’t been in a real classroom since the fourth grade. The Arnold, Pennsylvania, native was diagnosed with a rare form of actinic prurigo, a disease that causes severe reactions to sunlight and ultraviolet (UV) light. Adams dreamed of having a real college experience, and Penn State New Kensington was able to make the goal a reality.
Penn State World Campus students took part in a Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service project with Habitat for Humanity in San Diego, while others World Campus students are volunteering in Silver Spring, Maryland and joining other Penn Staters on the University Park and New Kensington campuses on Monday.
More than 50 Penn State students from five campuses took their day off from classes to make it a "day on" for the annual MLK Jr. Day of Service on Jan. 21. The 2019 Penn State New Kensington-hosted event featured volunteerism at six organizations in the Alle-Kiski Valley. In addition to New Kensington, participating campuses included Beaver, Fayette, Greater Allegheny and World Campus.
Almost 200 guests joined to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the local community at the annual Celebration of Unity Dinner at Penn State New Kensington. The event, co-sponsored by Hightower Scholars, Inc., also commemorated it's 10th anniversary with the lighting of a unity candle, guest speakers, dinner, a dance performance and readings by essay contest winners from Mary Queen of Apostles school.
Ashley Traini, class of 2005 and Dewey Traini, class of 2006, first met in 2003 during a student leadership conference at Penn State New Kensington. That meeting would become the first chapter in their Penn State love story, with the campus and student activities providing the perfect setting.
Nearly 50 Penn State New Kensington students attended the 2019 Leader Launch event organized by the campus' Office of Career Services. The annual conference is a professional development event featuring workshops and a networking dinner with alumni. The goal is for students to strengthen skills such as communication, job searching, career development and networking.
More than 40 Penn State New Kensington students traveled to University Park for the culminating THON 2019 event held Feb. 15-17. The campus was represented by campus dancers Bradyn Claycomb, Adam Johnson and Ashley Worlds, who were chosen by a committee of administrators, staff and alumni during an application and interview process.
