Elite softball recruit commits to New Kensington campus

Scarlett Stein is a leader in the classroom and on the field

NEW KENSINGTON, Pa. – Opening day for Penn State New Kensington’s softball campaign is more than three months away, but the recruiting season is in full swing as head coach Mike Marsili landed his top recruit for the 2018 season.

Scarlett Stein, a senior pitcher at Jeanette High School, has committed to attend the New Kensington campus. Stein personifies the student-athlete as she is number one in her class and number one on the Jayhawks softball team.

“Getting a recruit of Scarlett's reputation will give the softball program a huge lift,” said Marsili, who is in his ninth year as head coach. “She is just as proficient in the classroom as she is on the field.”

Stein is a do-it-all player for the Jayhawks. On the mound she has command of a variety of pitches and at the plate she hits for power and average. Her arm and bat led Jeanette to the playoffs in 2015.

As Marsili awaits the arrival of Stein, the New Kensington Lions open the 2017 season on March 19 against State University of New York-Delhi.
