Penn State President Eric Barron joined leaders from Penn State New Kensington and Westmoreland County for the grand-opening celebration of The Corner, Penn State New Kensington's new entrepreneurial center. The celebration was held Dec. 6, 2017, and featured remarks by Barron, Penn State New Kensington Chancellor Kevin Snider, the Westmoreland County Commissioners, and the mayor of New Kensington.
The Corner, located at 701 Fifth Avenue in New Kensington, is the brand new entrepreneurial hub in Westmoreland County and will provide access to the Corner Launchbox entrepreneurial programming, as well as active, membership-driven co-working space, operated by Pittsburgh's Beauty Shoppe. The Corner LaunchBox program and co-working space concepts were made possible in part by a seed grant of from Invent Penn State, a Commonwealth-wide initiative to spur economic development, job creation and student career success. Penn State New Kensington used the grant to create a unique model that melds entrepreneurship, co-working space and community-driven economic development to revitalize the city. The result is the first center of its kind in Westmoreland County with the goal of being a hub of collaboration, creation and innovation in New Kensington. The project, as well as the related New Kensington Corridor of Innovation, which spans five blocks of New Kensington's Fifth Avenue, is led by Penn State New Kensington, with assistance from partners such as the Westmoreland County Industrial Development Corporation, Beauty Shoppe, the City of New Kensington, and the Community Foundation of Westmoreland County, to name a few.
