Reimagining New Student Orientation at Commonwealth Campuses
NEW KENSINGTON, Pa. — Between the start of Maymester and the end of Summer Session 1 (May 12 to July 1), academic advisers held 13,278 New Student Orientation (NSO) advising meetings with students — 10,761 at University Park and 2,517 at Commonwealth Campuses.
Advisers at the Fayette, Greater Allegheny and New Kensington campuses were tasked with redesigning their NSO events for greater consistency and collaborating as a regional advising team to support one another.
“This collaboration has provided a valuable opportunity to share the load, gain deeper insight into each campus’ programs, and connect with faculty advisers throughout the region,” said Ruth Ann Herstek, associate director of academic advising at Penn State New Kensington. “We’ve all benefited from exchanging ideas and learning new approaches to NSO programming.”
