NEW KENSINGTON, Pa. – By exploring the Penn State New Kensington admissions office, prospective students might catch some Pokemon Go critters to help them get to the next level of the ubiquitous game. They also can catch some Penn State staff to help them get to the next level of higher education.

Traditional students, adult learners and veterans can see if the New Kensington campus fits their reality at the “Spend a Summer Evening” admissions event at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 11, in the Conference Center. Participants will meet staff and current students, and find out all they need to know about admissions, financial aid and student life. Students and their families can tour the campus and enjoy light refreshments.

“Students will learn about the admissions process and how to apply, costs and the new timeline for financial aid, what life is like outside the classroom, and ways they can get involved in campus activities and organizations,” said Danielle DeStefano, assistant director of enrollment management. “All this information is delivered through interactive sessions that will keep students and families engaged and having fun.”

A visit to the admissions office also could turn into a pseudo Pokestop. Instead of collecting balls and eggs, presumptive college students who fill out an application can collect a waiver of the $65 admissions application fee.

Those who can't make the August session will have additional opportunities during the fall to get acquainted with the campus. Four open houses, Student for a Day, a scholarship workshop and a financial aid seminar are slated from September to November to provide a sampling of the college admissions process. The schedule features:

  • Fall Open House: 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Sept. 24
  • Application Day: 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Sept. 28 and Oct. 11
  • Penn State Day Open House: 6:30 to 9 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 19
  • Be a Student for a Day: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 26
  • Scholarship Workshop: 1 to 3 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 26
  • Radiological Sciences and Biomedical Engineering Technology Open House: 6:30 to 9 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 27
  • Administration of Justice Open House: 6:30 to 9 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 9
  • Financial Aid 101: 6:30 to 9 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 10

To reserve a spot for any of the days, call the admissions office at 724-334-LION or 888-968-PAWS.
