Division of Undergraduate Studies (DUS)

Undecided about a major? You're not alone.

In fact, about 80 percent of students entering Penn State aren’t entirely sure about their choice of major. Choosing a major is simple for some, but for the majority of students, it’s not that easy. Perhaps you have dreams, goals, and ideas, but you aren’t quite sure how to put them all together. The Division of Undergraduate Studies can help.

Division of Undergraduate Studies

The Division of Undergraduate Studies (DUS) is staffed by professional advisors and is designed to assist all students with academic concerns and educational plans. DUS Advisors work primarily with those who are exploring majors and those who plan to transition to other University programs and campuses.

Services include:

  • New Student Orientation—This annual program helps incoming students evaluate their educational plans and objectives prior to attending class.
  • Major Exploration—Choosing a major can be difficult, but DUS can help! Start by using the Interests Filter in the University Bulletin to identify majors that may interest you, and don’t hesitate to make an advising appointment through Starfish.
  • Policies and Procedures—Advisors can help you navigate all the guidelines that pertain to your education, especially when it comes to educational planning and entering or changing majors.

The Division of Undergraduate Studies:

  • gives students time to explore different academic areas at Penn State
  • provides academic advising guidance to help students find majors suited to their interests, abilities, and goals
  • allows students to complete the necessary major requirements before entering their desired major (if applicable)
