Adult Learners and Veteran Resources

Penn States Definition of Adult Learners: 

  • Is 24 years or older; or 
  • Is a veteran of the armed services; or an active duty service member; or 
  • Is returning to school after 4 more years of employment , homemaking, or other activity; or 
  • Assumes multiple adult roles such as parent, spouse/partner, and employee. 

Penn State New Kensington’s academic and co-curricular programs provide our Adult Learners with a wide range of rich learning experiences tailored to meet their unique needs.  Our programs prepare and empower our adult students to achieve their educational, career, and personal goals.  Whether the goal is achieving a certificate, earning an associate’s degree, or pursuing a bachelorette degree, Penn State’s academic programs prepare Adult Learners for life outside of higher education.   

Adult Learner Community (ALC)

This organization promotes the interests of adult learners and aims to increase the awareness of the adult learner population to the campus community. This group meets through the Success Center.  For more information on the ALC and its programs, contact Ruth Ann Herstek at [email protected].

Adult Learner & Veteran Student Lounge

Penn State New Kensington has a dedicated lounge space for students who are adult learners, non-traditional, and U.S. military veterans.  Located on the ground floor of the Administration Building near the Student Life Office, this space includes soft seating, desk workspace, a desktop computer, coffee maker and mini-fridge, and resources for these student populations.

Child Care Subsidy Programs             

Penn State New Kensington provides childcare assistance to qualified full-time and part-time students who are in need of this service to attend college. Students with preschool age children are encouraged to apply for a stipend for child care assistance. You must be enrolled at Penn State New Kensington in order to receive this service. 

Students are encouraged to pick up a Child Care Assistance request form if they are interested in enrolling in the program. Please contact the Student Affairs Office at 724-334-6062 if you have additional questions or feel free to stop by the office.

Computer and Technology Resources

Penn State Wireless: The 'PSU' network can be connected to by most devices after you complete the setup. 

Microsoft Office Suite: Penn State provides the Microsoft Office Suite to Penn State students currently enrolled in credit courses at no additional cost.  University email is accessible through Microsoft Outlook online. 

Printing in the Labs: As a Penn State student you have 110 free sheets to print per semester.

Continuing Education/Prior Learning Assessment (PLA)

We are committed to providing professional and personal development courses and seminars to meet your specific needs. We bring the resources of a world-renowned teaching and research University to you. 

Prior Learning Assessment is the process of determining whether knowledge gained (in addition to course work) outside of the traditional academic environment is at the college-level and worthy of college-credit.  Earn college credit for what you already know!
